In a move that could adversely impact Indian professionals on visas in the US, President Donald Trump on Friday signed a proclamation raising the fee for H-1B visas to a staggering USD 100,000 annually. This is the latest effort by the administration to crack down on immigration.
White House staff secretary Will Scharf stated that the H-1B non-immigrant visa program is one of the most abused visa systems in the country’s current immigration framework. The program is originally designed to allow highly skilled laborers, working in fields where Americans do not typically engage, to come into the United States.
The Trump administration emphasized that the $100,000 fee aims to ensure that the individuals being brought into the country are genuinely very highly skilled and do not replace American workers.
