In a major crackdown on luxury car tax evasion, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Customs have launched a nationwide operation named **”Numkoor”**, with Kerala as a key focus area. This extensive operation is targeting high-profile individuals, including popular Malayalam actors **Prithviraj Sukumaran** and **Dulquer Salmaan**.
### Operation Details: Raids at Residences and Car Showrooms
Raids were conducted at 30 locations across the Kerala districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Kozhikode, and Malappuram. These included the residences of Prithviraj Sukumaran and Dulquer Salmaan, as well as prominent car showrooms statewide.
Officials, however, reported that no suspected vehicles were found at the actors’ homes during the searches. The operation is being carried out jointly by Customs officials and the Motor Vehicles Department, who are also inspecting high-end cars registered in Himachal Pradesh but used in other states, particularly Kerala.
### Modus Operandi
The investigators uncovered a common tactic: luxury vehicles are often registered in Himachal Pradesh and then transported across India, frequently with altered registration numbers to conceal their true origins. This practice allows evasion of taxes and scrutiny, prompting the authorities to intensify monitoring of documentation, registration procedures, and transportation routes.
### Ongoing Investigation and Cooperation
The operation is planned to proceed in multiple phases, focusing on thorough checks to safeguard revenue and ensure compliance with laws. The inclusion of celebrity residences has drawn significant media attention; however, officials have emphasized that the entire process is strictly procedural and part of a broader national effort.
Both Prithviraj Sukumaran and Dulquer Salmaan are reportedly fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
