Mumbai Wakes Up to Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms
Mumbai and its surrounding districts experienced a rain-soaked Saturday as heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms lashed the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Meanwhile, Palghar district is under a yellow alert.
So far, the downpour has not caused major flooding or significant traffic disruptions. However, civic authorities remain vigilant, especially in low-lying areas such as Sion, Dadar, Matunga, Santacruz, Andheri, Vile Parle, and Dahisar, which are prone to waterlogging during heavy rains.
Local Train Services Slightly Delayed
Local train operations have been only slightly affected. Central line trains experienced delays of 10–15 minutes, and Harbour line services were delayed by 5–10 minutes. Western Railway trains, however, have been running largely on schedule.
Weather Forecast
The skies over Mumbai and its suburbs are expected to remain overcast, with intermittent heavy rainfall and the possibility of extremely heavy showers in some areas. Daytime temperatures will stay below normal, with a maximum of 29°C and a minimum of 24°C.
Extended Forecast & Alerts
The IMD forecasts widespread rainfall activity across Konkan, Marathwada, and the ghat regions of Central Maharashtra from September 27 to 29. Officials have warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall events.
A red alert has been issued for Raigad district and the ghat areas of Pune on September 28, where landslides and flash floods remain a significant concern. Other districts including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Nashik, Satara, and Kolhapur will continue to be under an orange alert during this period.
Government Advisory
In response to the forecast, the Maharashtra government has urged residents to remain cautious and strictly follow official advisories. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone zones, and to stay updated through local authorities’ announcements.
The advisory also cautions against taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and emphasizes the need to take precautions against flood risks. Residents in vulnerable areas should make use of local relief shelters if required.
Authorities have strictly advised against crossing waterlogged streets or swollen bridges. Additionally, citizens are warned against spreading or acting on unverified rumours during emergency situations.
Stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety during this period of heavy rainfall.
