Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati, a self-proclaimed godman, was recently arrested for sexually harassing 17 women at an ashram in Delhi. After being on the run for 50 days, he was finally apprehended in Agra. Subsequent police investigations uncovered a series of fraudulent activities involving forged documents and fake claims of influence.
### Fraudulent Documents: Fake Visiting Cards and Passports
During the investigation, police discovered two forged visiting cards belonging to Chaitanyananda. One card falsely identified him as a Permanent Ambassador of the United Nations, while the other claimed he was an Indian Special Envoy of BRICS.
Moreover, authorities found that he possessed two passports issued under different names, each containing contradictory parental details and places of birth. Adding to this, Chaitanyananda held two bank accounts with the Union Bank of India, also under these different identities.
### Property Fraud: Rs 40 Crore Scam
In 1998, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor allotted a plot in Vasant Kunj to Sharada Peeth to establish a math. Chaitanyananda was appointed as the senior official of this institution. However, in 2008, he illegally changed the math’s name to the Sri Sharada Institute of Indian Management without any permission.
He proceeded to rent out the property without authorization, leading to a massive fraud estimated at Rs 40 crore.
### Arrest Details: Evading Arrest for Two Months
Chaitanyananda was arrested at Hotel First in Taj Ganj, Agra, around 3:30 AM after evading arrest for nearly two months. Notably, he had previously escaped molestation charges in 2009 and 2016 by leveraging his alleged influence.
Victims, primarily students, reported that some wardens at the management institute had introduced them to the godman, who would summon them to his room. He reportedly lured them with promises of free foreign trips and had even secretly installed cameras in their hostel rooms.
### Academic Fraud: Bogus Degrees and Fabricated Endorsements
Chaitanyananda claimed to be a highly qualified management guru with MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He also alleged having post-doctoral qualifications and honorary DLitt degrees from several universities.
His published books featured forewords attributed to Steve Jobs and appreciation messages from Ban Ki-Moon. However, the Delhi Police, as reported by NDTV, suspect that all these academic credentials and endorsements are fabricated.
