Indian women’s team pacer Arundhati Reddy recently shared details of a frightening incident that occurred during India’s first warm-up match against England on September 25, ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup.
**The Incident**
During the match, Reddy went for a return catch from England’s Heather Knight while following through. Unfortunately, she lost her balance and fell awkwardly on her left leg, collapsing on the field. The fall was severe enough to require immediate medical attention.
**Injury and Immediate Aftermath**
Reddy was unable to put any weight on her injured leg after the fall, and a wheelchair was brought in to take her off the field for treatment. The injury initially cast doubt over her participation in the World Cup.
**Remarkable Comeback**
Despite the scare, Reddy made a remarkable recovery and returned to play in India’s match against New Zealand. In that game, she took two crucial wickets and played a key role in helping India secure a thrilling four-wicket victory via the DLS method.
**Recovery Insights**
Following the match at Bengaluru’s BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground, teammate Harleen Deol asked Reddy how she managed to bounce back so quickly, especially after being in a wheelchair.
Reddy responded, “Initially, it was scary for me as well because at that time it was quite a big impact, so I was really scared to even get up. But I would really like to thank the medical staff and the team because they really did a good job.”
**Looking Ahead**
India will officially begin their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on September 30 at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.
Historically, India has hosted the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 1978, 1997, and 2013 but is yet to win the tournament. The team’s best performance on home soil came in the 1997 edition, when they reached the semifinals before losing to Australia in New Delhi.
