Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed deep grief over the recent stampede at a rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The tragic incident, which occurred during a rally addressed by actor-turned-politician Vijay, resulted in 40 deaths and left many others injured.
Speaking about the tragedy, Tharoor described it as “heartbreaking” and highlighted how such incidents reveal systemic flaws in crowd management across India.
**Safety Measures Need Urgent Attention**
Addressing reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor said, “It’s a very tragic and painful situation. Something is wrong in our country with crowd management. Every year, there seems to be an incident.” He recalled previous stampedes, like the one in Bengaluru, to emphasize the recurring nature of such disasters.
Tharoor stressed the urgent need for a national policy on crowd safety, stating, “There should be certain rules, standards, and protocols in place” to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
**Call for Government Action**
The Congress MP also urged cooperation between the central and state governments to establish “very strict procedures” for crowd control. According to him, without clear national standards, incidents like the Karur stampede will continue to claim innocent lives.
Tharoor’s remarks come in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of compensation for the victims’ families.
**Compensation Announced for Victims**
Prime Minister Modi has announced that each family of the deceased will receive ₹2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund (PMNRF). The injured will be given ₹50,000 each as part of the relief effort.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has also announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh to the families of those who died and ₹1 lakh for the injured.
Additionally, Vijay, the rally’s chief guest, pledged ₹20 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh to those injured in the stampede.
The tragic event in Karur once again underscores the critical need for effective crowd management to safeguard public gatherings across India.
