Apple has come forward to defend its decision to partner with OpenAI, turning down allegations that it sidelined Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI. The tech giant’s legal team made the statement in a court filing on Tuesday.

Apple’s lawyers emphasized that even though the company teamed up with OpenAI first, it is “widely known” that Apple plans to collaborate with other generative AI chatbots in the future. This response comes amid a growing legal conflict involving Musk’s enterprises.

### Legal Dispute Background

In August, Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, along with his social media platform X Corp., filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI seeking billions of dollars in damages. The lawsuit alleges that Apple’s preference for OpenAI over xAI has stifled innovation in the AI sector and limited choices for consumers.

The case was filed in Fort Worth, Texas, where Apple is now actively seeking dismissal.

### Apple Requests Case Dismissal

Apple’s legal team has dismissed the antitrust claims from Musk’s companies as “speculation on top of speculation.” They argue that Apple is under no obligation to partner with every generative AI chatbot regardless of factors like quality, privacy, or safety.

This argument specifically addresses X Corp.’s assertion that Apple cannot exclusively partner with OpenAI without also partnering with all other generative AI chatbot providers.

As the lawsuit unfolds, the tech world watches closely to see how these AI industry giants will navigate competition and collaboration going forward.
