Centre Considers Reviewing JEE & NEET Difficulty To Align With Class 12 Syllabus

New Delhi:

The Centre is considering a review of the difficulty level of entrance exams like JEE and NEET to ensure it aligns with the Class 12 curriculum. This move aims to reduce students’ dependence on coaching centres, according to sources. The review will be based on feedback from an expert panel set up to examine issues related to coaching.

“The panel is analysing data to study if the difficulty level of exams is in sync with the difficulty level of the Class 12 curriculum, which is the basis of these exams. Some parents and faculty members of coaching institutions feel that there is a mismatch between the two, which ultimately increases dependence on coaching,” a source said.

“Based on the panel’s feedback, it will be considered to review the difficulty level of these entrance exams,” the source added.

### About the Panel Set Up by the Ministry of Education

In June, the Ministry of Education formed a nine-member panel to examine issues related to coaching, the emergence of ‘dummy schools,’ and the effectiveness and fairness of entrance examinations.

The panel, headed by Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi, will suggest measures to reduce students’ reliance on coaching centres during their transition to higher education.

“The committee is examining the gaps in the current schooling system that contribute to students’ reliance on coaching centres, particularly the limited focus on critical thinking, logical reasoning, analytical skills, and innovation, alongside the prevalence of rote learning practices,” the source explained.

Additionally, the panel is evaluating awareness levels among students and parents regarding multiple career pathways and how this lack of awareness contributes to over-dependence on a few elite institutions. The committee will also assess the availability and effectiveness of career counselling services in schools and colleges and suggest measures to strengthen career guidance frameworks.

### Members of the Panel

The panel includes:
– Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
– Joint secretaries from the School Education and Higher Education departments
– Representatives from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Trichy, IIT Kanpur, and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT)
– Principals from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodaya Vidyalaya, and a private school

Coaching centres in India have been at the centre of several controversies. This initiative comes following complaints received by the government about rising cases of student suicides, fire incidents, inadequate facilities in coaching institutes, and concerns over their teaching methodologies.
