The Nobel Prize winners for 2025 will be announced starting next week, beginning on October 6. These awards are among the world’s most prestigious honors, recognizing outstanding contributions in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, economics, and peace.
The laureates will join the distinguished ranks of past winners such as Albert Einstein and Mother Teresa. Each Nobel Prize comes with a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor (nearly $1.2 million), an 18-carat gold medal, and a diploma.
Origins of the Nobel Prizes
The Nobel Prizes were established by Alfred Nobel, a Swedish businessman and chemist who invented dynamite. Nobel decided to dedicate his fortune to awarding annual prizes “to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.”
The first prizes were awarded in 1901 in the categories of medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace. In 1968, a sixth prize for economics was introduced by Sweden’s central bank.
Selection Process and Nominations
The nomination process for the Nobel Prizes remains confidential, with no nominations publicly disclosed by the various prize committees. Individuals cannot nominate themselves, but can be nominated multiple times by others, including members of each prize’s respective panel.
Although each Nobel committee has its own specific procedures, they all uphold Alfred Nobel’s vision by honoring those whose work has significantly benefited humanity.
