The Supreme Court of India has once again postponed the hearing of Vodafone Idea’s (Vi) petition challenging an additional demand of ₹9,450 crore by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The hearing, originally scheduled for today, has now been deferred to October 13.
According to Bloomberg, the Indian government is exploring a one-time settlement of its longstanding multibillion-dollar dues from Vodafone Group’s struggling local unit. This move is seen as an effort to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with the UK.
**Legal Strategy: Vodafone Idea’s Amended Petition**
Last week, Vodafone Idea filed an amended petition in the Supreme Court seeking a waiver of interest and penalties on its AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue) dues. The company argued that the disputed components of these dues have yet to be finalized.
Earlier this year, the Indian government became a 49% shareholder in Vodafone Idea through a debt-to-equity swap, acknowledging the need for a resolution. Last month, the government informed the Supreme Court that “some solution may be required” to address the issue.
**Financial Burden and Challenges**
Vodafone Idea currently owes approximately ₹83,400 crore in AGR dues. The company has stated that its cash flows are insufficient to cover these liabilities.
Former CEO Akshaya Moondra emphasized in August that an early resolution of the AGR dispute is critical for securing further bank funding.
Vodafone Idea serves around 198 million subscribers and employs over 18,000 people, making its financial health a matter of significant importance for the telecom sector and economy.
The industry and stakeholders are now awaiting the Supreme Court’s next hearing on October 13 for further developments in this ongoing case.
