Google has confirmed its ongoing commitment to the smart display category, hinting at the possible launch of new versions of its popular Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max devices “soon.” This announcement follows the recent unveiling of a new smart speaker built for Google’s AI-driven Gemini smart home platform, though at that time, there was no mention of upcoming smart displays.

### Confirmation: Google Is ‘Definitely’ Committed to Smart Displays

Anish Kattukaran from the Google Home team spoke to The Verge, reaffirming the company’s dedication to smart displays. He stated they are “definitely committed to smart displays,” adding that there will be “news to share there soon.” This confirmation underscores Google’s focus on this device category despite the absence of new smart display launches in recent months.

### Smart Displays as an ‘Incredible Form Factor’ for Gemini

During an episode of The Vergecast, Kattukaran elaborated on the potential role of smart displays within Google’s future plans, especially in relation to the Gemini platform. He described smart displays as an “incredible form factor” for interacting with Gemini for Home. According to him, these devices combine a microphone and speaker for audio input and output, with a screen that complements voice interactions by visually presenting information.

### Multi-Modality: The Ultimate Form Factor for Gemini

Kattukaran also highlighted smart displays as adding a vital vision component to Gemini’s multi-modality. He said, “As I see where Gemini for Home is going and Gemini more broadly, Google’s upcoming Nest Hub devices will play a key role.” This approach aligns with how multi-modal AI systems can enhance user experience by integrating both audio and visual interactions.

### Growing Competition in the Smart Display Market

Google’s renewed focus on smart displays comes as Amazon has recently launched two new Echo Show smart displays for its Alexa Plus AI assistant. These new devices feature the advanced AZ3 Pro processor, edge-based computing capabilities, and an Omnisense fusion platform that enables local data processing from smart home sensors.

These advancements from Amazon highlight the increasingly competitive landscape in the smart display market, pushing Google to innovate and expand its offerings.

Stay tuned for further updates as Google prepares to unveil its next generation of smart display devices.
