South African cricketer Nonkululeko Mlaba has been reprimanded and handed a demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching its Level 1 Code of Conduct during the recent ICC Women’s World Cup match against India in Vizag.
**The Incident**
The incident occurred during India’s innings when Mlaba waved goodbye to batter Harleen Deol after dismissing her in the 17th over. The ICC deemed Mlaba’s action offensive and in violation of Article 2.5 of its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
Article 2.5 explicitly prohibits “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”
**Disciplinary Action**
As this was Mlaba’s first offense in a 24-month period, she was awarded a single demerit point. Mlaba accepted the charge and agreed to the sanction proposed by Trudy Anderson of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Consequently, no formal hearing was necessary.
The charges were brought forward by on-field umpires Jacquline Williams and Kim Cotton, third umpire Candace le Borde, and fourth umpire Sue Redfern.
**Match Highlights**
Despite the controversy, South Africa secured an impressive three-wicket victory over India. Nadine de Klerk’s unbeaten 84 was instrumental in chasing down India’s total of 252 runs with an over to spare. India’s Richa Ghosh also delivered a stellar performance, scoring 94 runs.
This win ended India’s previously unbeaten run in the tournament, marking a significant moment in the competition.
