Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, has opened up about India’s shocking 3-0 Test series defeat against New Zealand at home in late 2024. This loss marked India’s first Test series defeat on home soil in 12 years.

“If I am being honest, and speak from the heart, I don’t think that in my coaching tenure, I can ever forget that,” Gambhir told JioHotstar.

### Learning Lessons from Past Failures

Gambhir stressed the importance of remembering past failures as a way to learn and improve. “I have told this to the boys as well, it is important to look forward, but sometimes it is also important to remember the past as well,” he said.

He also revealed that everyone in the dressing room had expected India to easily beat New Zealand before the series started, making the 3-0 whitewash all the more shocking.

### Historical Context and Impact

The 3-0 loss was the first time since 2000 that India failed to win a Test series at home, the previous defeat being a 2-0 loss to South Africa. This unexpected defeat significantly dented India’s chances of qualifying for their third World Test Championship final.

India eventually failed to qualify after losing the subsequent series 3-1 to Australia on their turf.

### Current Series and Career Transitions

India is currently facing West Indies in the second and final Test of their ongoing series in Delhi.

The final Test of the series against New Zealand in Mumbai was also a milestone, marking the last home Test game for senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Ashwin announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket in December 2024, while Sharma and Kohli retired from Test cricket in May 2025.

However, fans can still catch Sharma and Kohli in action during the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19 in Perth.
