Four people were killed in a shooting in the Mississippi Delta region after a high school football homecoming game, Mississippi state Senator Derrick Simmons told The Associated Press.
The shootings occurred in the downtown area of the small town of Leland, Mississippi, where people had gathered following the game, said Simmons, who represents the region. Four other victims were taken to a hospital in Greenville and later flown to a larger hospital in the state capital, Jackson.
Senator Simmons expressed confidence in the accuracy of the information, having received updates from authorities with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident, as well as from other law enforcement agencies.
“Right now we still have a subject at large, but I can’t give specifics,” said a spokesperson identified as White on Saturday morning.
An 18-year-old man is being sought for questioning in connection with the shooting, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office stated. Authorities have requested that anyone with information contact the local police chief or sheriff’s office.
The shootings occurred on the campus where the Heidelberg Oilers were playing their homecoming football game on Friday night. However, it is not yet clear exactly when the gunfire happened or how close it was to the stadium.
White reported being at the scene on Saturday conducting an investigation and noted that more information might be released in the coming days.
Leland is a town of about 640 residents located approximately 85 miles (137 kilometers) southeast of Jackson, the state capital city.
