In a spectacular performance during Match 12 of the ICC Women’s World Cup, England spinner Sophie Ecclestone delivered a match-winning spell, dismantling the Sri Lankan batting lineup with a brilliant four-wicket haul.
Chasing a target of 254 runs, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 164 in just 45.4 overs, largely thanks to Ecclestone’s exceptional bowling figures of 4 wickets for 17 runs from her 10 overs, which included 3 maidens.
**A Brilliant Bowling Spell**
Ecclestone was introduced into the attack in the 19th over and immediately made an impact with an economical and probing spell. Her first victim was Hasini Perera, whom she enticed to step out before dismissing her on a wicket-maiden over.
She continued to wreak havoc as Harshitha Samarawickrama attempted to pull the ball but was caught out. Kavisha Dilhari then fell to a precise delivery, being bowled clean. Ecclestone wrapped up her devastating spell by bowling Chamari Athapaththu with an absolute ripper, sealing Sri Lanka’s fate.
**Milestones and Records**
This four-wicket haul marked Ecclestone’s fourth such achievement in Women’s One Day Internationals (WODIs). Over the course of 12 matches in this World Cup alone, she has amassed 30 wickets at an outstanding average of 12.93.
Her tally now makes her the fourth-highest wicket-taker for England in Women’s World Cup history, surpassing the likes of Katherine Smithies and Katherine Sciver-Brunt, both of whom took 29 wickets.
Overall, Sophie Ecclestone has reached an impressive milestone of 134 wickets in 78 WODI matches at an average of 18.91.
With performances like these, Ecclestone continues to be a vital asset for England and a formidable force in women’s cricket worldwide.
