Ace England spinner Sophie Ecclestone delivered a match-winning performance against Sri Lanka in Match 12 of the ICC Women’s World Cup. Chasing a target of 254, Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 164 in 45.4 overs, with Ecclestone starring with the ball.

Ecclestone produced a brilliant spell, taking 4 wickets for 17 runs from her full quota of 10 overs, including 3 maidens. Introduced into the attack in the 19th over, she bowled with both control and aggression throughout the innings.

Her first victim was Hasini Perera, whom she fooled into stepping out to a wicket-maiden over. She then dismissed Harshitha Samarawickrama, who was caught while attempting a pull shot. Kavisha Dilhari fell next, bowled by a precise delivery, followed by an outstanding yorker that dismissed the dangerous Chamari Athapaththu.

This four-wicket haul marked Ecclestone’s fourth four-fer in Women’s One Day Internationals (WODIs). Across 12 matches in this World Cup, she has claimed 30 wickets at an impressive average of 12.93.

With this performance, Ecclestone has become England’s fourth-highest wicket-taker in Women’s World Cup history, surpassing both K. Smithies and Katherine Sciver-Brunt, who have 29 wickets each. Overall, she has amassed 134 wickets in WODIs from 78 matches at an average of 18.91.

Sophie Ecclestone’s outstanding bowling once again proved crucial in England’s campaign as they tightened their grip in this year’s prestigious tournament.
