The Advanced Innovation Challenges to be piloted in 2026 by the European Innovation Council (EIC) are starting to take shape, according to EIC president Michiel Scheffer.
Speaking at a Science|Business webinar at the end of September, Scheffer highlighted that there would be “continuity” between the issues the EIC tackles now and the challenge topics planned for the future. Possible focus areas include mobility, soils, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing hardware.
He also noted that how open the goals of these challenges will be depends on whether a likely procurer exists for the technology in question. “When there is, let’s say, a potential buyer at the end, it is…” Scheffer explained, emphasizing the importance of end-user demand in shaping the innovation challenges.
These developments signal the EIC’s commitment to addressing pressing technological and societal needs through targeted innovation initiatives in the years ahead.
