**15 Places Across The US That 1000% Are Haunted (And I Don’t Even Believe In Ghosts)**
“I experienced loud footsteps walking across a large, completely empty room; they stopped right in front of me.”
Since it’s October, you know what that means: everything feels spookier, scarier, and way more haunted. So, in the spirit of the season, and inspired by a post on the Ghosts subreddit from user Gettysburgboy1863 asking about the most haunted places in the US, I decided to compile a list of some of the most haunted spots mentioned. Check them out below:
1. **St. Augustine, Florida**
Couldn’t say for certain, but the people of St. Augustine claim the title as their own. It is, after all, the oldest city in America, predating the USA itself.
2. **Gettysburg, Pennsylvania**
Known for its intense Civil War history, Gettysburg is often cited as one of the most haunted places in America.
3. **Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas** – *u/SlugJones*
According to Atchison’s tourist site, the Sallie House is the town’s most famous haunted house. Sallie was a 6-year-old girl who suffered from appendicitis and tragically died on the operating table after the doctor began surgery without anesthesia. A waiver is required to visit the house.
4. **The Queen Mary**
I wouldn’t say it’s the “most haunted,” but I definitely know the Queen Mary had lots of unexplained activity on board. I definitely heard stuff when I was there.
5. **New Orleans, Louisiana**
I’m convinced it’s New Orleans. Good and evil do battle every night there, creating an eerie atmosphere like no other.
6. **Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery in Midlothian, Illinois** – *u/DyfedH*
This cemetery has seen many claims of ghosts and paranormal activity. There’s the infamous woman ghost on the checkered monument who was captured on infrared film in 1991 and even earlier in the ‘70s. Paranormal investigators have reported unexposed and overexposed shots on film. Some have also claimed to see a plantation house that disappears upon approach. I visited myself and felt uneasy in certain places, though I never captured anything out of the ordinary.
7. **Savannah, Georgia**
Savannah is very haunted. I had my first pseudo-paranormal encounter there. My sister and I went to Bonaventure Cemetery at dusk and saw what looked like a ghost—or at least someone dressed as—a Confederate soldier in the distance. To avoid an uncomfortable interaction with a racist (or a racist ghost), we turned around and came back during the day.
8. **Texas** – *u/steamTrain-wrx*
Texas reportedly has around 7,517 paranormal encounters, making it one of the most haunted states in the US.
9. **Jerome Grand Hotel in Jerome, Arizona**
Built in the 1920s as a hospital for the mining town, the Jerome Grand Hotel has a dark history filled with deaths, including suicides and tragic accidents like someone crushed by the still-operational elevator. I stayed there and saw the window in my room open and close by itself. Strange noises filled the night, which might be explained by the old building’s boilers, but I felt an overall sense of unease and the feeling of being watched.
10. **Myrtles Plantation, Louisiana** – *u/ReadontheCrapper*
During my second visit, a coworker who was skeptical about ghosts and I were standing outside on a still day when suddenly we smelled gardenias—though there were no flowers or breeze nearby. Later, staff told us that gardenias were once grown there but haven’t been for a long time. My coworker still didn’t believe in ghosts but admitted she couldn’t explain the perfume smell.
11. **Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky**
I experienced loud footsteps walking across a large, completely empty room; they stopped right in front of me. I was alone on the second floor with no one else in that wing at the time. Our whole team had strange experiences during our two nights there.
12. **Prospect Place Mansion in Trinway, Ohio**
Both times I visited, I had experiences. The wildest was seeing a full-body, human-shaped black shadow figure six feet in front of me that my bright flashlight couldn’t penetrate.
13. **The Villisca Axe Murder House in Iowa** – *u/Darkmoonlily78*
According to iowacoldcases.org, sometime around midnight between Sunday, June 9 and Monday, June 10, 1912, a person or persons entered a modest house in Villisca and bludgeoned to death eight people sleeping there, including two adults and six children aged 5 through 12.
14. **Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, just outside of Chicago**
This eerie cemetery has been the site of many reported hauntings and unexplained phenomena.
15. **Mammoth Cave in Kentucky**
I have investigated several locations in the US, but this is one place I will not return to. The paranormal energy is overwhelming.
