It’s been a little over a week since Nintendo released the *Close to Me* short video, and it has sparked quite a conversation among the Shacknews staff about what we’d like to see next from the Big N. With a treasure trove of intellectual property to choose from, now seems like the perfect time to ask this week’s question:
**What should be the next Nintendo Pictures Short?**
—
### Kirby
**Ozzie Mejia, Senior – ‘Right Back At Ya’ DVD seeker**
If Nintendo is getting into the business of family-friendly shorts, there’s arguably no better mascot than their resident pink puffball, Kirby. Kirby exudes cuteness with a happy-go-lucky demeanor that both kids and adults love. Plus, the potential for wacky adventures is endless and perfectly suited for six-minute shorts.
The world simply doesn’t have enough Kirby content. In fact, it needs more Kirby—as much as it can get. And why not have him go one-on-one with King Dedede in an eating contest? That would be a blast!

### Yoshi’s Island
**TJ Denzer, Senior News Editor**
Every time Nintendo brings us back to Yoshi’s Island, it’s with some of the most vibrant, fun, and even experimental visuals they can muster. I think a Nintendo Pictures Short set in that colorful world would be fantastic. The aesthetic possibilities are vast—the paper scrapbook style of the original Yoshi’s Island games, the yarn look seen in *Wooly World* and *Crafted World*, or even the soft 3D visuals showcased in shorts like *Close to Me*.
I’m a big fan of the Yoshis and their vibrant, tropical island home, and seeing more of it in a dedicated short would delight me.

### Star Fox
**Asif Khan – Has done a barrel roll**
For us Star Fox fans, who have long lost hope of a new game, this IP would be perfect for short videos spotlighting iconic moments. The Star Wolf encounter on Venom immediately comes to mind.
I would love to see the cast of Star Fox back on any screen at this point. Come on, Doug Bowser—make it happen!
—
### Animal Crossing
**Bill Lavoy, Shackmaps Overlord**
I’ve never played a Nintendo game as much as *Animal Crossing: New Horizons*. It was the perfect game at the perfect time, featuring adorable characters like Isabelle. Tom Nook was there too—but let’s be honest, he’s a bit of a crook.
If Nintendo intends to make shorts a regular feature, *Animal Crossing* definitely has to be on the list, Tom Nook optional.
—
### The Legend of Zelda
**Sam Chandler, Ocarina player**
I think it’s time Nintendo gave us a sneak peek at what a *Legend of Zelda* series could look like. Maybe they could lean away from the traditional video game aesthetic and present a brand new vision.
I’d love to see an anime-style Zelda short—Link taking down Ganon with the Master Sword, Zelda channeling her inherent power. Make it anime AF.
—
### Star Fox (Again)
**Dennis White Jr., Looks edgy like Falco in the mornings**
A brand new Star Fox short would be a great way to remind people that Star Fox still exists. Even now, people are discovering the animated short from nearly 10 years ago and assuming it’s a new project.
The opportunity is there for Nintendo to nail this. Let’s see it happen.

### Animal Crossing (Again)
**Donovan Erskine, Villager**
Short films could provide a fantastic opportunity to explore existing IPs in ways we don’t usually get from the games themselves.
In *Animal Crossing*, the entire world revolves around you, the player character. All the villagers’ words and actions are tied directly to your needs. I’d love to see a short focusing solely on the animal villagers and what they get up to outside of the daily human routine.
It could feature fan-favorites like Tom Nook or Isabelle—or perhaps a lesser-known villager.

### The Legend of Zelda (Again)
**Steve Tyminski, Hero of Time!**
This is an interesting question with so many solid options. You could even go with *Donkey Kong Bananza* to flesh out the relationship between Donkey Kong and Pauline, exploring their story beyond the main game, maybe hanging out in New Donkey City.
In my opinion, shorts could shine a light on franchises that have been somewhat dormant—like Star Fox and Kid Icarus.
But for this question, I have to choose *The Legend of Zelda*, a series with some of Nintendo’s best storytelling. There are countless timelines and characters to explore, and the interactions between Link and Zelda could be compelling.
And if fans don’t like the direction, Nintendo always has the failsafe excuse of “it’s not canon.”
So, my pick is *The Legend of Zelda*, with an honorable mention to *Donkey Kong Bananza*.
