It’s a little bit synergistic and a little bit opportunistic.
When we started this calendar year, we were thinking, “Okay, the tenth anniversary is this year for Angry Birds 2.” We’ve wanted to bring the Space theme into the game for a long time. As I mentioned, this is the first time in six years that we’re actually adding new gameplay mechanics—true new gameplay mechanics—into the core of the game.
On top of that, we wanted to ensure we had a strong marketing campaign so people would know about these exciting updates. We initially targeted mid-to-late October as the perfect moment to launch the event.
As we thought further about how to tie this update to something really interesting, we realized TwitchCon is also celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. It was just so perfect.
We quickly reached out to the folks at TwitchCon and said, “Hey, we’d love to do something with you guys. We were thinking about doing a drone show. Would you be open to us doing a drone show at TwitchCon?” They responded enthusiastically, “Yeah, absolutely!”
From there, we explored ways to collaborate, and the TwitchCon block party seemed like an ideal place to celebrate. It was a perfect opportunity to party with our fans and creators, and to have a great time celebrating ten years of Angry Birds 2, ten years of TwitchCon, and the release of the new Space event.
