According to NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, the company is now out of the Chinese AI market. This decision is certainly not due to a lack of interest. China remains one of the most booming and profitable markets worldwide, but ongoing trade war policies between the US and China have created significant challenges for companies like NVIDIA.
The trade tensions, driven in part by former President Trump’s efforts to bring manufacturing back to the United States, have forced NVIDIA to navigate a complex and difficult landscape. For NVIDIA, this has meant ending its current business operations in China.
Huang expressed his frustrations about the situation during Citadel Securities’ Future of Global Markets 2025 conference, as reported by Wccftech. He revealed that the political turmoil caused NVIDIA to lose a massive opportunity overseas.
NVIDIA has been heavily impacted on both sides of the US-China trade war. In April 2025, the US government introduced new export restrictions on NVIDIA’s H20 AI chips being sold to China. This move ended up costing the company an estimated $5.5 billion.
Despite this setback, NVIDIA sought to salvage the situation. Some Chinese customers managed to obtain licenses to purchase its AI chips. However, soon after, the Chinese government issued guidance instructing domestic companies not to buy NVIDIA’s AI chips. This effectively halted NVIDIA’s business dealings in China for the time being.
The combination of export controls and government guidance from both countries has left NVIDIA sidelined in one of the world’s most important markets.
