The UK is set for more cold weather and a sprinkling of snow after cold Arctic air brought wintry conditions over the weekend. Temperatures have dipped into single digits thanks to a “cold northerly airflow this weekend” following what were predicted to be the coldest pair of days so far this season on Saturday and Sunday.
Sunday morning started chilly yet sunny across central and eastern parts of the UK. However, clouds over Northern Ireland and Scotland are expected to bring outbreaks of rain moving southeastward throughout the day. Some colder air moving across the Scottish mountains may even bring a chance of a little snow.
Greg Dewhurst, a Met Office meteorologist, explained:
“We’ve had a cold northerly airflow across us so far this weekend, but all eyes are on the northwest as the next weather system brings cloud and rain in from there, sweeping it southeast across the country over the next 24 hours. It remains blustery into the beginning of next week, but there are signs of a bit more Atlantic weather coming in, which will allow temperatures to rise a little as the week goes on.”
He continued:
“This morning had a chilly start, particularly where sunny skies were present across central and eastern parts. However, it quickly clouded over in Northern Ireland and Scotland, with outbreaks of rain pushing slowly southeastward through the day. The rain might meet some colder air across the Scottish mountains, resulting in a little snow — not unusual for this time of year. By the afternoon, rain will reach the higher ground of Wales and the southwest of England. The southeast of England will generally stay cloudy, but by the end of the afternoon, some light and patchy rain could develop.”
Temperatures are expected to remain similar to Saturday’s, ranging from 8°C to 12°C, with cloud and wind coming in from the northwest as it gets colder into the evening.
This latest forecast comes after Storm Benjamin battered the UK this week, bringing heavy downpours and winds over 70mph. The Met Office issued four yellow weather warnings for Thursday, and over 40 flood alerts were in place in the morning.
**Looking Ahead:**
**Monday:** Expect sunny spells and a scattering of showers to start. These will ease with sunny intervals through the afternoon. However, cloud will increase in the west with rain arriving by the evening. It will be breezy.
**Tuesday to Thursday:** Weather remains changeable with some further rain or showers at times, especially in the northwest. It will be driest and brightest towards the southeast. Temperatures are set to recover to near average for most areas.
