Spain is a clear leader in research and innovation supporting the EU’s green and digital transitions, securing more than 17% of the funding available in Horizon Europe. Since 2021, Horizon Europe has invested €1.44 billion in 186 projects related to these transitions, involving more than 3,000 organisations.
These numbers are expected to grow in the coming months as the European Commission evaluates the 2025 batch of “twin transition” projects. Spain’s share of the funding includes €253 million across 542 participations in 147 projects. This accounts for almost a fifth of the entire funding pot, surpassing its overall performance in Horizon Europe.
Across the whole Horizon Europe programme, Spain ranks third in terms of funding, securing 10% of the total, and third in participations, with 11%. Its performance in supporting green and digital transitions is significantly stronger than in Horizon Europe overall, highlighting Spain’s leading role in driving the EU’s twin transitions.
