The 2025 season for the Denver Broncos has gotten off to a great start. Currently sitting at 6-2, the team is performing well on both offense and defense, despite the setback of Patrick Surtain II’s injury. However, one area that needs attention is the tight end position. While Evan Engram has been solid, he can’t carry the load alone.
The Broncos have been hit hard with injuries at tight end, leading them to seek additional depth. Recently, they have been working out 41-year-old free agent Marcedes Lewis to potentially bolster the position. NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported that the Broncos are hosting a workout with Lewis, though it remains uncertain if they will sign him to a short-term deal.
Marcedes Lewis brings a wealth of experience to the table. He was a 2006 first-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars and spent 12 seasons there before moving on to five seasons with the Green Bay Packers and the last two seasons with the Chicago Bears. Last season, Lewis appeared in all 17 games, albeit with limited playing time, catching only one pass for two yards.
Lewis’s career highlights with the Jaguars are impressive. He started 162 games, the second-most in franchise history, including five playoff starts. Over his time in Jacksonville, he recorded 375 receptions for 4,502 yards—averaging 12.0 yards per catch—and scored 33 touchdowns. He ranks ninth in scoring, third in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, and fifth in scrimmage and all-purpose yards in Jaguars franchise history.
Adding Lewis to the Broncos roster makes a lot of sense given their current injury issues at tight end. Nate Adkins suffered an injury against the Dallas Cowboys, and Lucas Krull is already sidelined with a foot injury. Lewis’s veteran presence could provide much-needed stability and depth.
Notably, Marcedes Lewis is the oldest player to ever play tight end in NFL history. Should he sign with Denver, he would become the second-oldest active player in the league, trailing only Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is five months older.
With the Broncos pushing hard in the 2025 season, the potential addition of Lewis could be a key move to keep their tight end group competitive and healthy as they aim for a deep playoff run.
