For the first time in 27 years, a Utah Jazz player has scored 50 points in a regular-season game. Lauri Markkanen delivered a spectacular performance, putting up 51 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to lead the Jazz to an overtime victory over the Phoenix Suns on Monday.

Markkanen achieved his first career 50-point game by shooting 14-for-32 from the field, including 6-of-13 from beyond the arc. He also made an impressive 17 free throws, showcasing his scoring versatility and endurance.

This marks the first regular-season 50-point outing for the Jazz since Karl Malone scored 56 points against the Golden State Warriors on April 7, 1998. While Donovan Mitchell has two 50-point games to his name, both came during the playoffs rather than the regular season.

“I was wishing, trying to end the game in regulation, the legs are kind of tired at that point, but couldn’t get it done,” Markkanen admitted. “But I guess it was an opportunity for this.”

The 28-year-old Finnish forward was quick to credit his teammates, especially Keyonte George, who contributed 10 assists during the game. “I always credit my teammates; they put me in great positions, and you just gotta knock down some shots and stay aggressive,” Markkanen said.

Markkanen’s previous career high was 49 points, and his hard work clearly paid off. “He works really hard on his game. I think tonight we saw some of the physicality in the midrange,” said Jazz head coach Will Hardy.

Markkanen’s performance not only electrified the crowd but also reminded everyone of the talent and determination within the Utah Jazz roster.
