Four years ago, Amazon Games launched the MMORPG *New World*. Since its release, the game has experienced a rollercoaster of events, including a significant refresh when it expanded to consoles under the title *New World: Aeternum*.
Following the conclusion of Season 10, the developers have announced that content updates for *New World* will come to an end. This news arrives amid reports of mass layoffs at Amazon, which have impacted various divisions, including Amazon Games.
In a recent blog post on the official game website, the *New World: Aeternum* development team detailed what this means for the future of the game. While new content updates will cease, the servers will remain operational through 2026, allowing players to continue enjoying the game. The team also pledged to provide six months’ notice if a server shutdown becomes necessary.
Players will still be able to purchase in-game currency, as well as download and install *New World* for the foreseeable future. However, it is important to note that there will be no refunds on items such as Masks of Fortune.
Our editor, Donovan Erskine, reviewed *New World* in its original form in 2021, as well as *New World: Aeternum* in late 2024. In both reviews, he found promise in the game, recognizing the experience of the development team despite the game not fully reaching the heights he had hoped for.
This end of content updates coincides with Amazon’s announcement of major layoffs, affecting approximately 14,000 employees worldwide. While the *New World* team did not directly address the layoffs, it is confirmed that Amazon Games has been impacted.
Though content updates are ending, *New World* players can continue exploring Aeternum with the game’s servers planned to run through 2026, maintaining the world’s adventure for the community for the near future.
