**Sen. John Fetterman Earns Republican Praise for Criticizing Democrats Over Food Stamp Assistance Amid Government Shutdown**
Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) has drawn commendation from Republicans after calling out his own party regarding the ongoing partial government shutdown and its impact on food stamp assistance.
“As a committed Democrat, I’m dismayed my party is playing chicken with the food security of 42 million Americans,” Fetterman declared in a post on X on Tuesday. “I reject a political gamble that exposes a vulnerable constituency to widespread deprivation and chaos.”
A recent statement on the U.S. Department of Agriculture website warns that “the well has run dry” for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and that “there will be no benefits issued November 01.”
The statement further stressed, “We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats. They can continue to hold out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures or reopen the government so mothers, babies, and the most vulnerable among us can receive critical nutrition assistance.”
Fetterman has consistently voted to advance a stopgap funding measure aimed at ending the shutdown. However, these votes have repeatedly fallen short of the threshold required to move the measure forward in the Senate.
His stance has led some GOP lawmakers to respond positively. Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) thanked Fetterman on Wednesday, writing, “Thank you @SenFettermanPA for being a voice of reason, compassion and putting Americans first.” Similarly, Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) commented Tuesday, “A rare voice of reason in the Democrat party. Sadly, Senators Kelly and Gallego are siding with party loyalty.”
As the shutdown continues, Democrats face increasing pressure over why working families are being used as leverage in the political standoff.
