WME Sports agent Jim Murray, formerly the agent for Anthony Volpe and other MLB stars, has been banned by the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) for four years and fined $100,000 for double-dealing with the MLB commissioner’s office during negotiations for the 2020 season.
The Athletic reported that the MLBPA alleged Murray had shared confidential union information with MLB and assisted the league in crafting its proposal while both sides were negotiating how to conduct a 2020 MLB season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of a settlement, Murray must pay $150,000 to reapply for certification as an agent after his four-year ban ends. During this decertification period, he is prohibited from negotiating playing contracts but can continue to advise existing clients in other capacities, according to The Athletic.
Neither MLB nor the MLBPA has publicly commented on the report.
The MLBPA and Murray reached the settlement on Wednesday, just one day before an arbitrator was scheduled to hear the case. Initially, the union had imposed a lifetime ban on Murray, which he subsequently appealed.
This is not the first controversy involving Murray. Last year, he faced scrutiny related to his move from Excel Sports Management to WME Sports. An arbitrator ruled he had flagrantly breached his contract by making the move.
According to The Athletic, during his recruitment to WME, Murray submitted a bio claiming credit for helping bring baseball back during the pandemic. He wrote, “Jim also played a significant role in unprecedented labor negotiations in 2020, helping bring baseball back on the field during the pandemic,” as noted in the arbitrator’s ruling.
