Former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon has been synonymous with professional wrestling for most of his career. The 80-year-old owned WWE for over four decades and was the driving force behind transforming the promotion into the global juggernaut it is today.
Veteran journalist Bill Apter recently made a surprising revelation about Vince McMahon, stating that he wasn’t actually fond of professional wrestling. Given that WWE had been owned by the McMahon family for generations before its merger with the Endeavor Group, Apter’s statement is particularly intriguing.
Speaking on the latest episode of *The Wrestling Time Machine* on Sportskeeda WrestleBinge, Apter shared that everyone he spoke to backstage mentioned the same thing about Vince. He praised the former WWE owner, saying that nobody could promote wrestling the way McMahon did — despite not being truly passionate about the sport.
“Nobody could promote it the way he did. He caught lightning in a bottle, and he knew what to do with it. But everybody I talked to, even the guys that worked backstage and all that, just said he wasn’t really fond of professional wrestling, but look what he did to it,” Apter said.
Vince McMahon bought WWE from his father, Vince McMahon Sr., in the 1980s and quickly elevated the company to new heights. Shortly after taking full control, he created the Showcase of the Immortals — WrestleMania. He transformed it into the grandest event of the year, a tradition that has continued annually for the past 40 years.
Thanks to his business acumen and visionary leadership, WWE has remained at the top of the industry despite numerous attempts by competitors to dethrone it. Vince McMahon’s genius ensured that WWE stayed dominant, solidifying its place as a leader in professional wrestling.
