Jerry Jones does damage control on recent comments about his gas business

Earlier this week, Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones gave the impression that he’s not fully committed to his football responsibilities. On Friday, he attempted to dial back that perception.

During a victory lap about the recent success of a natural-gas venture, Jones told the Wall Street Journal, “There’s $100 billion present value with gas out there. That’s why I’m talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Dallas Cowboys.”

However, Jones clarified his stance during one of his twice-weekly visits to 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.com. “In the real world, Santa Claus does not put the tricycle under the Christmas tree. We all know that. You have to have juice to make it go.”

Right, but Jones made it clear that some of his energy is being directed elsewhere. “Every day, every time I can, I’m looking for ways to give advantages to the Dallas Cowboys,” he said. “Anybody that says I don’t focus on the Cowboys is just living in the moment of frustration, and I get that. And I’m frustrated too.”

It was Jones who initially raised the issue. On Friday, he downplayed it further: “You know where I ought to be. What did we spend, 15 minutes away from trying to help that defense?” That 15 minutes refers to his phone call with the Wall Street Journal.

The bigger question remains: How much more of his recent time and attention has been devoted to his 12-figure natural-gas project? Whatever the exact amount, it’s more than any other General Manager has spent on activities outside of improving their team.

That reality paints a bad look and strengthens the argument that Jones should serve solely as the owner of the Cowboys. It may be time for him to hire a full-time General Manager who can dedicate 100% of their focus to making the team better.
