The attorneys general of 21 Democratic states and Washington, D.C., along with two advocacy groups, filed a lawsuit against the Education Department on Monday. The legal action challenges a recent rule change to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) student debt relief program.
The Trump administration finalized the new rule last week. According to the update, individuals engaged in what the administration terms “unlawful activities” will no longer qualify for student debt relief under the PSLF program.
The PSLF program allows government workers and nonprofit employees to receive loan forgiveness after making 10 years of qualifying payments. The recent rule change has raised concerns about eligibility and access to this important form of debt relief.
