On a tough election night for Republicans in other states, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis pointed to migration patterns as a contributing factor. He noted that many voters who might have supported more conservative candidates in their home states have moved to Florida.
“If you look at all 49 other states since I’ve been governor, look at who’s migrated to Florida—more Republicans than Democrats have moved here from all 49 states. Vermont, New York, Illinois, you name it,” DeSantis said on Tuesday’s episode of *Hannity*.
He emphasized that this migration isn’t limited to newcomers; there has also been significant movement within Florida itself. “When I got elected, we had 300,000 more registered Democrats in Florida. Today, we have 1.4 million more Republicans,” he added.
While DeSantis did not directly comment on Virginia’s elections, he addressed the impact of migration on races in New York City and New Jersey, particularly Democratic strongholds. Regarding New Jersey’s Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli, DeSantis stated, “He would have won four years ago and he would have won tonight if you just take all the Republicans who’ve left New Jersey since I’ve been governor and moved to Florida.”
He continued, “If they could have still voted in New Jersey, he would have won both of those races.”
On New York City’s elections, DeSantis acknowledged a different dynamic. Although Republicans crossed over for Andrew Cuomo in the past, Zohran Mamdani emerged victorious in the recent race. The Governor noted that former Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani “would not be able to win with this electorate the way it is now.”
DeSantis explained this by pointing out that “center-right voters leave,” resulting in an electorate that becomes increasingly liberal over time.
He also recognized that not all Floridians are thrilled with the influx of newcomers, hinting at some tensions as the state’s demographics shift.
