While his friends were on their flight back to Germany, Lars began to exhibit signs of paranoia while alone at the hotel. Hotel security recorded Mittank pacing the halls and at one point hiding in an elevator. He left the hotel at around 1 a.m., was gone for about an hour, then returned for a few hours before calling his mother again to claim that the people trying to rob or kill him were close by.
Later that day, Mittank went to the airport and saw Dr. Kosta Kostov, who cleared him to fly. Kostov recalled that Mittank was “nervous and erratic.” Upon being told he was fit to fly, Mittank reportedly yelled, “I don’t want to die here, I have to get out of here!” before running out of the office.
Security footage shows him sprinting out of the doctor’s office and through the airport before making his way outside. Witnesses claim they saw him climbing over a fence before disappearing for good.
