John Cena’s Retirement Tour Nears End: Father John Cena Sr. Praises Crown Jewel Match, Criticizes Build-Up
Former WWE Champion John Cena is just weeks away from his final professional wrestling match. The Unseen 17 is set to bow out from the world of professional wrestling at next month’s Saturday Night’s Main Event. Throughout this year, Cena has been on a retirement tour, revisiting rivalries from his past and competing against some current stars.
His last match against AJ Styles at WWE Crown Jewel received widespread acclaim, with many fans considering it his best match during this farewell run. Recently, John Cena’s father, John Cena Sr., shared his thoughts on the match and the lead-up to it, calling out Triple H for what he described as a lackluster buildup.
In an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda Wrestling, Cena Sr. expressed his frustration with the minimal buildup to his son’s match at Crown Jewel — which primarily took place on WWE’s social media platforms. Despite this, he was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the match itself.
“There wasn’t much. It was a poor buildup. It was a very poor buildup to what I consider to be a phenomenal match. Forget about John Cena Jr. That was an outstanding match. And any of the young people coming up ought to take a good look at that match because that’s the way it ought to be in pro wrestling. That was phenomenal,” Cena Sr. said.
The 17-time WWE World Champion now has only four more dates remaining on his retirement tour. One of the highly anticipated appearances will be next week’s episode of Monday Night RAW in his hometown of Boston. Fans are eager for any clarity regarding Cena’s plans heading into Survivor Series.
Rumors had circulated that Cena might face Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship—a title that has eluded him his entire career. However, it appears that this potential match has now been scrapped.
