Convertito explains, “People thought Gene’s friendship with Robert was not normal. He brought it everywhere, he talked about it in the first person as if he weren’t a doll, he was Robert. As in, he is a live entity.”
Gene never parted with Robert, even as an adult. He became a painter and moved into a large house on Eaton Street in Key West, famously known as The Artist House. Gene placed Robert in an upstairs window, where the doll could “look” outside.

Children walking to school often told their parents that they saw Robert move in the window. Some even claimed that his head would turn to watch them. These eerie encounters frightened many children, who began crossing the street to avoid walking near the house.
Life After Gene Otto’s Death
When Gene died in 1974, a woman named Myrtle Reuter bought his house. She kept Robert with her for the next twenty years. Reuter shared stories of hearing footsteps in the attic when no one was there and the sound of a child laughing mysteriously.
She swore that Robert would move from room to room without being touched. Visitors also reported that Robert’s face would change and look mean whenever they said something negative about Gene.
After living with these unsettling experiences for two decades, Reuter finally donated Robert to the Fort East Martello Museum.

Robert is not the only object believed to bring bad luck to those who ignore warnings. For instance, a grandmother’s final words reportedly warned her family never to hang a certain painting in their home—what happened next terrified them.
Even at the museum, strange events associated with Robert continue. Many visitors say their cameras suddenly stop working when aimed at the doll, only to function normally again once they leave the museum.
Because of this, the museum has put up a sign asking visitors to request Robert’s permission before taking his picture. Despite this, many people think the rule is silly and choose not to follow it.
