Square Enix has confirmed upcoming layoffs and office closures as it prepares to restructure its US and other Western operations once again.
While rumors about layoffs in the company’s Western offices had been circulating for some time, Square Enix recently published a financial presentation that officially confirmed its decision to reduce its presence overseas. The focus will now shift toward reallocating resources back to its core business in Japan.
The financial presentation, available on Square Enix’s investor relations website, provides details about the upcoming layoffs and operational changes.
Square Enix’s Western operations have been declining for quite a while. In 2022, the company sold several of its Western studios, including Crystal Dynamics, Eidos, and Square Enix Montreal. This marked a significant scaling back of its international footprint.
Additionally, Square Enix has had to rethink its strategy in the West before, notably shifting from platform-exclusive titles to multiplatform releases. This change came after the early sales of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth fell short of expectations.
These recent decisions highlight Square Enix’s focus on strengthening its domestic business and optimizing its global strategy amid evolving market conditions.
