An Inside Look at Sunday’s Jets-Browns NFL Week 10 Matchup at MetLife Stadium
Marquee Matchup: Browns DE Myles Garrett vs. Jets OTs Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou
In the postgame locker room in Cincinnati, a few Jets players were checking scores from other games when someone blurted out, “Myles Garrett had five sacks.” The reaction was one of disbelief. Garrett is the type of player who commands respect and amazement from his fellow NFL athletes. The superstar defensive end ranks second in the league with 10 sacks and leads a Browns defense that is ranked second overall, allowing just 276.9 yards per game.
Garrett is on the brink of making history—he needs just two more sacks to become the first player to reach 12 sacks in six consecutive seasons, breaking a tie with Giants legend Lawrence Taylor.
For the Jets, rookie Armand Membou and second-year player Olu Fashanu have performed well this season, but Sunday’s game will be their biggest test yet—an even bigger challenge than facing Steelers star T.J. Watt in Week 1.
“Garrett needs a lot of attention and he’s just that type of player, but our guys are ready for that,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said. “And listen, we had that with Watt, we had to give him a lot of attention, too, so it won’t be anything new for us. There’s going to be times where guys are going to be one-on-one, and when you are one-on-one, you got to win your battle.”
Four Downs QB Question
Jets coach Aaron Glenn chose once again not to reveal who his starting quarterback will be for Sunday’s game. After Justin Fields’ impressive performance in Cincinnati, which helped the Jets to their first win, it’s hard to imagine Glenn benching him.
Fields went 21-of-32 for 244 yards with a touchdown and orchestrated a thrilling 39-38 comeback victory. Meanwhile, Tyrod Taylor practiced this week and is healthy following a knee injury that sidelined him against the Bengals. While Glenn continues the gamesmanship, the expectation remains that Fields will start under center.
Fields hopes the Jets can build on their momentum from the Bengals game. “We’ve been building on everything since Week 1,” Fields said. “We have a lot of games that were one-score games and we just happened to be on the other side of that one score game this time. So, we know games are going to be like that each week, week-in and week-out, but I think the biggest thing is just building on that win and just taking that momentum into this week.”
Pick Up: Jets’ Interception Drought Continues
The Jets remain the only NFL team without an interception this season—a staggering streak. Their eight-game drought is the second-longest to start a season, according to ESPN stats. The record is 10 games without an interception to begin a season, set by the 2017 Raiders.
The Jets traded away cornerback Sauce Gardner, who has just three career interceptions. Could that shake things up for the Jets’ defense?
“No one is happy when you don’t have interceptions, because when you tip balls and things like that, you usually get them,” Glenn said. “Some of that is luck, we just haven’t had a chance to get those, but when you do get a chance to get your hands on the ball, we haven’t caught some of them either. So, it’s a little bit of everything combined.”
Woe Away from Home: Browns’ Road Struggles
The Browns enter this game on a 12-game road losing streak—the longest in the NFL since the Jaguars went 18 games without a road win from 2019-22. Their last road victory came in Week 2 of the 2024 season against the Jaguars. Since then, they have lost seven consecutive road games by at least 13 points.
While this skid is significant, it doesn’t approach the franchise’s worst road losing streak: Cleveland lost 25 straight road games from 2015-18.
New Faces for the Jets
The headlines around the Jets’ recent trades have primarily focused on the players they shipped out, but the team also acquired some promising talent. The biggest additions came at wide receiver with the acquisitions of Adonai Mitchell from the Colts in the Sauce Gardner trade and John Metchie from the Eagles in the Michael Carter II deal.
The Jets have been searching for reliable receivers opposite Garrett Wilson, who is set to return from a knee injury this week. Can these newcomers provide the needed complement to Wilson?
“They’ll definitely be a part of what we’ve got going on,” Glenn said.
Costello’s Call
This could be an ugly game in the rain at MetLife Stadium. Both offenses have struggled this season. However, the Jets may get a boost from the recent big trades and rally together to silence the doubters. It likely won’t last, but the team could enjoy a short post-trade bump and take home an ugly win.
Jets 17, Browns 13.
