Nebraska Volleyball’s coach Dani Busboom Kelly recently opened up about the program’s historic stadium game that broke multiple attendance records.

On August 30, 2023, the Nebraska Women’s Volleyball team competed against Omaha in a landmark outdoor match held at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska—the iconic home of the Nebraska football team. In front of a packed crowd of 92,003 fans, the Huskers dominated the game with a commanding 3-0 victory. The set scores were 25-14, 25-14, and 25-13, completing a straight sweep over Omaha.

This outdoor volleyball match shattered several records, including the previous world record for attendance at a women’s sports event. The former record was set during the Champions League match between FC Barcelona and Wolfsburg on April 22, 2022, in Barcelona, Spain, with 91,648 fans in attendance. Additionally, it surpassed the record for an American women’s sporting event, which was established at the FIFA World Cup Final (USA vs. China) held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on July 10, 1999, where 90,185 fans witnessed the game.

In a recent interview on the podcast *Welcome To The Party*, hosted by Abby Wambach and Julie Foudy, Huskers head coach Dani Busboom Kelly reflected on the significance of the record-breaking match. When asked about the growth in the team’s popularity since her return to the program, she expressed amazement at the extensive reach the team now enjoys.

“I’m just shocked by the reach that Nebraska has now. And it was a stadium game. I think that got everybody, you know, noticed that was volleyball, Nebraska volleyball, women’s sports,” Busboom Kelly remarked (43:19 onwards).

Coach Busboom Kelly initially served as an assistant coach at Nebraska from 2012 to 2016 before leading the Louisville Cardinals for eight years. Her return has coincided with a resurgence in the program’s success and fan engagement.

Nebraska Volleyball’s Harper Murray also weighed in on the stadium game’s impact during an interview with B1G Volleyball. Murray expressed confidence that the team could break attendance records again in the future.

“I feel like the perfect example is a stadium match,” Murray said. “I think I have met some people who have asked me where I play. They were like, ‘Are you on the team that played in the football stadium?’ And I was like, yeah. I feel like that’s a perfect example—not many schools could do that, and I am convinced that we can do it again if we really want to do. So I mean it’s amazing.”

Currently undefeated this season, the Nebraska Volleyball team is gearing up for their next big challenge when they face UCLA on November 14, 2025.

With a record-breaking attendance and an unstoppable winning streak, Nebraska Volleyball continues to make waves both on and off the court.
