Queen Camilla’s son, Tom Parker Bowles, has shared a distressing account of how his beloved Jack Russell, Maud, was “brutally attacked” by a large dog while out on a walk.
On Thursday, Tom posted on his Instagram about the terrifying incident that took place on Kensington High Street. He described walking Maud on her lead on an unusually warm and sunny November day when they encountered a “vast dog,” which he suspects was a Cane Corso, restrained by a metal chain lead.
Writing alongside a photo of Maud, Tom recounted, “We saw a vast dog, ahead, possibly a Cane Corso, on a metal chain lead. And passed it very carefully, giving it a hell of a lot of room. But it spotted Maud, dragged the owner off his feet and brutally attacked her.”
The larger dog, estimated to weigh around 15 stone, overwhelmed Maud’s tiny two-stone frame. Tom described the desperate struggle to save his pet, including rolling on the pavement and trying to free her from the aggressive dog’s jaws. “It seemed like hours, but was probably no more than 30 seconds,” he added.
Following the attack, Maud was left seriously injured and has since undergone major surgery. Tom called the experience harrowing but emphasized his brave little dog is fighting to recover. “She’s still in the emergency vet, but she’s a fighter and everything is crossed. Her vital signs are stable, touch wood,” he shared.
Using the post as a warning, Tom stressed the importance of muzzling potentially dangerous dogs. “The point of this horrible story is to say that dangerous dogs like this should always be muzzled. Always,” he urged, although he acknowledged, “I’m a great believer in there being no bad dogs, rather bad owners.”
Tom also took a moment to thank the strangers who came to their aid and praised the kindness of Londoners. He expressed gratitude to an old man who hit the attacking dog with a stick, a lady who whistled to hail a cab to get him to the emergency vet, the cab drivers who helped transport him, and the veterinary team at Village Vet in Chiswick who saved Maud’s life.
“It may all seem a bit shit at the moment. But there are so many good people out there. The kindness of strangers is immense. Don’t believe all the crap about London. It’s still the greatest city on earth and I’m so very proud to be a Londoner,” Tom concluded.
The post received an outpouring of support from friends and followers. Jemima Khan wrote, “So sorry for poor Maud please keep us posted on here re her recovery x.” Olly Smith added, “Love you, Tom. Sending all the greatest vibes to Maud and a massive hug to you xxx.” Candice Brown also sent her wishes: “Ohhhh sending so much love to Maud and all of you ❤️.”
