Colton, Olofsson score 1:19 apart, streaking Avs beat Islanders 4-1

**Avalanche Extend Winning Streak with 4-1 Victory Over Islanders**

*DENVER (AP)* — Ross Colton and Victor Olofsson scored just 1:19 apart in the second period to help the streaking Colorado Avalanche secure a 4-1 win against the New York Islanders on Sunday night.

Brock Nelson contributed a goal and an assist, while Martin Nečas added an empty-netter for the NHL-leading Avalanche. Colorado has now won six straight games, improving their record to 13-1-5, and has earned at least one point in nine consecutive contests.

Scott Wedgewood made 28 saves for the Avalanche, and although NHL scoring leader Nathan MacKinnon was held without a point for the first time in 12 games, Colorado’s offense surged at key moments.

For New York, Emil Heineman scored, and goaltender Ilya Sorokin stopped 25 shots. The Islanders had won the first four games of their seven-game road trip ahead of this matchup.

During the first media timeout, Colorado honored Islanders head coach Patrick Roy. Roy began his Hall of Fame career in Montreal before being traded to the Avalanche in December 1995 during Colorado’s inaugural season. He led the team to its first Stanley Cup title just six months later and backstopped them to a second championship in the 2000-01 season. Roy retired following the 2002-03 season but returned as head coach in 2013, guiding the Avalanche to a 112-point finish in his first season. He resigned abruptly in the summer of 2016. The Islanders hired him as their head coach in January 2024.

The game opened with New York taking a 1-0 lead just 2:05 into the first period when Tony DeAngelo’s shot from the right circle deflected off Heineman’s left skate and past Wedgewood. Colorado challenged the goal, arguing Heineman kicked the puck in, but the goal stood.

Colorado responded in the second period with Colton tying the game at 4:32 on his third goal of the season. Then, Victor Olofsson tipped a shot from Sam Malinski by Sorokin at 5:51 to give the Avalanche the lead.

Brock Nelson and Martin Nečas capped the scoring in the final minute, sealing the 4-1 victory.
