For decades, the term “crazy cat lady” has been thrown around as an insult. Sadly, this outdated and unfair stereotype toward cat lovers persists even today. Despite our progress in many areas, it seems we’ve made little headway when it comes to dispelling these purrfectly hurtful and pawsitively untrue myths.
Recently, a female flight attendant experienced this firsthand during a flight with her male superior. During some uncomfortable small talk about children, she explained that she did not want kids. According to her boss, this was absolutely unheard of. He insisted that she would be lonely in her old age, with only her cats for comfort.
As if that was an insult at all! Many of us would be happy to be surrounded by the love and companionship of cats as we grow older. Thankfully, she managed to navigate the awkward situation and is now seriously considering reporting his inappropriate comments to HR.
If you ask us, she absolutely should. We guarantee that if she had been a dog lover, he never would have made such a remark.
It is baffling why society assumes that all cat lovers will end up sad, lonely, and living in cluttered homes filled with dozens of cats. Cats are excellent companions. While it’s true that some cat lovers accumulate several cats by taking in strays, this doesn’t mean we are all destined to have more litter boxes than floor space.
We sincerely hope she reports him. Perhaps as part of his learning process, he can discover just how much love a cat can give. Then, maybe he’ll realize how wrong his assumptions were—and learn a thing or two about compassion along the way.
