For decades, the term “crazy cat lady” has been used as an insult, perpetuating hurtful and untrue stereotypes about cat lovers. Sadly, despite the passage of time, these misconceptions remain widespread.
Recently, a female stewardess found herself in an uncomfortable situation while on a flight with her male superior. During some forced small talk about children, she explained that she didn’t want to have kids. To her shock, her boss responded that this was “absolutely unheard of” and insisted that she would be lonely in old age, with only her cats to keep her company.
As if having cats for companionship is an insult! Many of us would be more than happy to be surrounded by the love and comfort of cats in our later years.
Thankfully, she managed to extricate herself from the awkward conversation, and now she is seriously considering reporting the incident to HR. We wholeheartedly believe she should do so.
It’s telling that if she had been a dog lover, her boss likely would never have made such a comment. But why is it assumed that all cat lovers will end up sad, lonely, and living in cluttered homes full of dozens of cats?
Cats are wonderful companions. Yes, it’s easy to accumulate more cats if you take in strays, but that doesn’t mean every cat lover is doomed to have more litter boxes than floor space.
We sincerely hope she reports her boss, and that as a consequence, he takes the time to learn about the love and joy cats bring to their owners. Perhaps then he’ll realize how wrong he was and gain a better understanding of compassion.
