Gunmen have killed two persons in an attack on Eruku community in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State on Tuesday evening. It was gathered that the armed gang attacked worshippers inside the Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Isegun, killed one person, and abducted some others during the incident. Eyewitness accounts in the community also indicated that many residents fled into nearby bushes for safety when the attackers stormed the area. “They came in the evening and started shooting. Two people were killed instantly, and we don’t even know how many were taken,” one resident said. Another resident, who lamented that the community had been under repeated attacks in recent times, called on the government and law enforcement agencies to ensure adequate security. Members of the community said that the police, vigilantes, and the Eruku Progressive Union had mounted resistance in recent weeks, but the renewed assault has heightened fear among the people. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the development, saying that police operatives and members of the vigilance team responded swiftly to the attackers. She described the incident as “an attempted bandit attack” in Eruku on Tuesday evening. The PPRO said that the “DPO Eruku and his team of police operatives, in collaboration with vigilantes, swiftly responded to the sound of gunshots emanating from the outskirts of the town, prompting the hoodlums to flee into the bush. “Upon thorough search of the area, one male victim, Mr. Aderemi, was discovered fatally shot inside the Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Isegun; while one Mr. Tunde Asaba Ajayi, another victim of fatal gunshot, was found in the bush. A vigilante member, Segun Alaja, sustained gunshot injuries and was immediately rushed to ECWA Hospital, Eruku, for medical treatment. “CP Adekimi Ojo commended the swift response of the police and vigilantes. He also assures the public that security agencies will not relent until these hoodlums are totally decimated. Further updates will be provided as investigations progress.”.
