Novato resident Gabe Casanovas ran for three touchdowns to help the St. Vincent de Paul football team advance to the North Coast Section Division V championship game following a 42-28 victory over Maria Carrillo on Saturday. Casanovas accounted for well over 100 yards on the ground while running back George Chaput also ran for three touchdowns to account for all the scoring for St. Vincent (11-1). The top-seeded Mustangs, who have won section and state titles each of the past two seasons, are set to face No. 2 seed Ferndale 35-7 winners over Salesian for the section title at 7 p. m. next Saturday at Rancho Cotate High. Boys basketball Brian Wright had a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds as Archie Williams kicked off the campaign with a 74-46 victory against Arcata on Friday night. Meezy Butler had 14 points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals for the Peregrine Falcons (1-0). Ephraim Sohn added 14 points including four 3-pointers and Grady Stewart added eight points, 10 assists, and four steals in Mike Clagett’s coaching debut for the program. San Domenico turned up the pressure in the second half en route to a 46-41 non-league victory over Terra Linda on Friday. The Panthers locked down the Trojans in a 19-4 third quarter and San Domenico led the rest of the way. Oskar Valiauga was a big presence in the paint, finishing with 13 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks. Omar Williams tallied 16 points, including a crucial 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter. Ika Jokhadze finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three assists for the Panthers. Marin Academy battled Ukiah into overtime on Friday night, eventually falling 71-63. MA (1-1) led 34-24 at the half but was outscored 37-27 after the break and 10-2 in overtime. Novato held the lead at halftime but was outscored by 16 points in a key third quarter of a 62-51 season-opening loss to Analy on Friday night. The Hornets (0-1) led 27-26 at the break before being outscored 26-10 in the third. Girls basketball San Rafael dropped its season opener 67-27 against St. Mary’s on Friday night. Girls soccer Allie Marovich and Remi David found the back of the net to lift Terra Linda to a 2-0 win against Encinal in its season opener on Friday night. Nina Iyer assisted Marovich’s 13th-minute goal. David scored in the 50th minute from the penalty spot. Jojo Fetterman-Riggle had the shutout in goal for TL (1-0-0). Ryder Higgins Jones scored twice to lead San Rafael to a 4-0 home victory against Mt. Diablo on Friday night. Jaela Brown added two assists for the Bulldogs (2-0-0). Jamie Ordonez scored the third goal then Darby Fones closed out the scoring with an Olympico a goal directly from a corner kick. Janelle Tarca had an assist for San Rafael. Men’s basketball Former Archie Williams standout Will Heimbrodt scored 13 points and had five rebounds to help lead Seattle to a 77-69 win against Stanford on Friday night. Former Marin Catholic standout AJ Rohosy added 12 points and four rebounds for Stanford. Heimbrodt is second on the Redhawks in scoring, averaging 16. 4 points per game across four starts. Rohosy is averaging 10 points through five games all starts for the Cardinal. Sargent Jeffery led five players in double figures with 19 points for Dominican University in a 93-89 loss to Stanislaus State on Saturday. Darius Best added 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists for the Penguins (3-1). Dominican pulled within a point twice in the final minute on buckets by Nick Medeiros and Best but was unable to take the lead. Women’s basketball Kaylyn Buchanon had 16 points, six rebounds, and five steals to lead Dominican to a 64-53 win over host San Francisco State on Friday night. The Penguins (3-0) outscored the Gators 23-6 in the second quarter to take a 35-15 lead into the half. Janiya Swayer added 11 points and Mahliya Wilson scored 10 points. Women’s soccer Former Tam High standout Yuna McCormack made her second start of the NCAA Tournament, playing 68 minutes to help Florida State move into the third round following a 1-0 win against Lipscomb on Thursday. Florida State is set to face Georgetown on Sunday. Lena Sugrue (Branson) and Maren Jones (Tam) both had assists as Tufts moved into the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament following a 2-0 win against Middlebury on Saturday. Tufts is set to face University of Mary Washington on Sunday. Three Marin prep standouts also saw action for Middlebury with Chloe Swindle (Marin Academy) and Stella Espinasse (Tam) starting while Mari Rode (Archie Williams) came in off the bench. Patricia DePalma (Branson) and Imogen Jenkyn (MA) both started for Pomona-Pitzer in a 0-0 tie against Washington and Lee on Saturday. Pomona-Pitzer won on penalties to advance to the NCAA D-III quarterfinals against Emory University on Sunday. DePalma played the first 45 minutes in goal while Jenkyn played 72 minutes, with one of her two shots on target.
