The University of Arizona women’s volleyball team will compete against West Virginia University this Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 6 p. m. in McKale Center with intentions of squashing their 3-0 losing record in their last three matches. History vs. West Virginia The Wildcats and Mountaineers have a fairly short competition history, with only two games having been played between the teams. The two first met in San Diego in 2019, where the Wildcats won 3-1. The second time the two played was last season in 2024, where the Wildcats won for the second time, 3-0. The Wildcats will look to get their third win against the Mountaineers as part of their second-to-last game of the season. Mountaineers this season The Mountaineers (15-13, 3-13 in the Big 12) have had a bit of a rocky season, ranked third to last place in the Big 12 conference, above Texas Tech University and the University of Houston. They are currently on a three-game losing streak, having just lost to Iowa State University in a five-set game. Standout players this season for the Mountaineers include Nina Horning, Alexis Finnvold, LonDynn Betts and Laila Ibrahim. Horning has been a crucial player for the Mountaineers offense this season at the tip of the leaderboard with 314 kills. Finnvold has also been an important player to the team’s offense, leading in assists with 707 as well as service aces with 52. On the defensive side, Betts has accumulated 415 digs, which is double Finnvold’s digs who comes in second on the leaderboard with 195. Ibrahim dominated at the net all season, finishing with 107 blocks, showing just how consistently she shut down opponents and controlled the front row. Wildcats this season Arizona (14-12, 8-8 in Big 12) is also on a three-game losing streak after having lost to the University of Utah 3-2. The Wildcats are going into the game tied for 8th place with BYU in the Big 12 conference. Jordan Wilson continues to be Arizona’s most dominant player on offense, tallying 429 kills this season and tying her game high of 29 on Friday night against the Utes. Avery Scoggings, another key player to Arizona’s team, takes the top spot on the leaderboard for both service aces and assists. Scoggins has had an incredible season with 1, 021 assists, a number that towers over the next player on the leaderboard, Brenna Ginder, with just 95. The gap shows just how extraordinary Scoggins’ playmaking ability is. On defense, Ginder has dominated the court with 339 digs, and Adrianna Bridges controlled the net with 79 blocks. With the Wildcats favored over the Mountaineers going into Wednesday’s game, they hope to break their losing streak and come out successful in their second-to-last game of the season.
