The Kyle Tucker sweepstakes is likely going to take over baseball this offseason as the star is expected to leave the Chicago Cubs. Tucker is projected to sign a massive $427 million deal, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic, which would largely limit his suitors on the open market. The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are seemingly the top two teams in the sweepstakes this winter. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers recently put together a poll of 16 MLB executives and asked them where Tucker would sign this offseason. This panel predicted Tucker would sign with the Yankees over the Dodgers, as New York led with six votes while the Dodgers finished second with four votes. “The Yankees kept coming up in answers, but they weren’t the only ones,” Rogers wrote. “One respondent thought Baltimore or Detroit could put more than $400 million in Tucker’s pocket and the voter who chose Philadelphia did it with the caveat of Kyle Schwarber leaving. But coming in second in our poll were the back-to-back World Series champions.” The Yankees could look to replace Cody Bellinger with Tucker. In the short term, the two are very comparable, but Tucker is expected to be the much better player over the next 10 years. It’s going to be hard for the Yankees to outbid the Dodgers if Los Angeles truly wants the star, but New York is one of the only teams that could compete in this kind of bidding war. Either way, Tucker’s free agency sweepstakes could change the entire outlook of the league, especially if he lands alongside Aaron Judge with the Yankees.
