Tom Stoppard, one of the greatest playwrights and screenwriters of the past century, died on November 29, 2025, at the age of 88.

In this February 28, 1999, “Sunday Morning” profile, the Czech-born Stoppard—who emigrated as a child to England during World War II—spoke with Eugenia Zukerman about his probing and intellectually stimulating works.

During the interview, Stoppard discussed the significance of having his play performed for the first time at the National Theatre in London. He also shared insights into his deep love for theater and language, which is prominently reflected in his acclaimed screenplay for *Shakespeare in Love*.
