McArthur junior Ryder Willman recorded the highest season average in the county and finished as the top performer among Broward boys bowlers at the state championship. Willman was recognized as the Sun Sentinel Broward Boys Bowler of the Year.
At the state championship, Willman placed 32nd with an impressive total score of 830 (185-222-220-203). He maintained a remarkable 209 season average, placed third at the district tournament, and led his team to a runner-up finish, which secured their advancement to the state tournament.
Willman made a crucial impact during the district tournament, stepping up in the 10th frame with three strikes to lift his team. “My goal was to make it into the top 16 at states,” Willman said. “Overall, I still did really good and that was a good feeling. At districts, we came together as a team. My greatest moment was helping my team get to states. I was able to propel us in the last frame.”
Earlier in his career, Willman bowled a perfect game with a 300 in league action last March. Starting his high school bowling journey as a freshman at West Broward High School, he transferred to McArthur and has reached the state tournament in both of his seasons there.
Throughout his high school career, Willman has trained at SpareZ in Davie, where he also competed in a Saturday league to continue honing his skills. Beyond high school competitions, he has participated in tournaments such as the Florida State Tournament.
Reflecting on his perfect game, Willman shared, “It was an amazing day and a great moment for me. It’s been a lot of practice and working on my mechanics. I was able to see the results and my scores going up.”
This season, Willman also embraced a leadership role by mentoring new bowlers on the team. He provided instruction and support to help his teammates improve throughout the season.
Having started bowling at age 5, Willman aspires to continue competing at the collegiate level. “My goal is to continue to improve and help the team get to states again,” he said. “I would like to get into the top 16 next year at states. I receive a lot of support from my parents. My dad has been involved a lot and I have learned so much from him. He also helped me get the equipment I needed. I wouldn’t be here without him.”
