Boulder City High School girls basketball team made a significant leap this past week by winning a pair of league games, propelling them to third place in the 3A league standings.

“We are playing much more team basketball,” said head coach Brian Bradshaw. “Our guards are shooting better, which is opening up the inside game. We have also been more successful playing a full court game and running the floor. We have the ability to wear teams out.”

The Eagles kicked off their winning streak with a dominant 72-43 victory over The Meadows on January 21. They used a commanding 41-19 run in the second half to take control of the game. “Scoring 70 points against a team like Meadows says a lot about how well we are playing right now,” Bradshaw noted. “In the Meadows game, we passed the ball very well and ended up with 26 assists, which has to be a single-season record for us. Our ball movement was exceptional.”

Leading the charge offensively against The Meadows were Lauren Mueller, who tallied 20 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists, and Kyra Stevens, who added 15 points and eight rebounds. Makenzie Martorano contributed 12 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists, while Kendall Shamo chipped in nine points and four assists. Defensively, the Eagles were just as impressive, tallying 21 steals against their opponents.

Building on that momentum, the Eagles faced off against rival Moapa Valley on January 23. The game was tightly contested until the fourth quarter when Boulder City pulled away with a 17-0 run to secure the victory. “This was our biggest win of the season and our kids deserved to win this game,” Bradshaw said. “I’m so proud of how we pulled away in the fourth quarter. Playing a more challenging schedule and having a lot of close games early in the season definitely had an impact on how we closed out the game.”

In the matchup against Moapa Valley, Makenzie Martorano posted a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and six steals. Kyra Stevens added seven points, 11 rebounds, and five steals, while Rihanna Maza scored six points. Amaya Findlay and Lauren Mueller each contributed four points.

Looking ahead, the Eagles aim to keep their winning streak alive as they travel to Virgin Valley on Friday, followed by a home game against Amplus Academy next Wednesday. With their improved teamwork and strong performances, Boulder City is poised to continue making waves in the league.
