Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered a judicial inquiry into the deadly stampede that occurred at actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur.
The probe will be led by retired Madras High Court judge, Justice Aruna Jagadeesan.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of at least 39 people and injured nearly 100. The crowd surged to an estimated 27,000 attendees, far exceeding the expected turnout of 10,000.

**Who is Justice Aruna Jagadeesan?**
Justice Jagadeesan served as a puisne judge at the Madras High Court from 2009 to 2015. During her tenure, she headed several high-profile Commissions of Inquiry in Tamil Nadu.
Notably, she was part of the bench that cleared Chennai Police in February 2015 regarding alleged fake encounters. She has also investigated the violence following anti-Sterlite protests in Tuticorin in 2018 and probed cases related to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s wealth.

**Relief and Promise from the Government**
Chief Minister Stalin announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for those injured in the stampede.
He described the incident as “unprecedented” in Tamil Nadu’s political history and assured that strict action will follow once all facts are established.
Stalin visited the injured at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur late Saturday night, paying tribute to the victims.

**What Triggered the Stampede?**
The stampede was triggered by a crowd surge after TVK’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle announced that Vijay would arrive at the rally venue by 12 noon.
Despite requesting permission for the event between 3 pm and 10 pm, Vijay arrived late at 7:40 pm.
According to Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police G. Venkataraman, this delay led to overcrowding, as people arrived early without sufficient food or water under the hot sun.
